Q. Why use The Fairy App?
Looking at a form guide, or using sophisticated betting apps and websites, can be a complicated and at times confronting experience.
Fairy Racing simplifies the process to picking a horse to find those horses which align with your thinking – and you can have a little fun along the way…!
Fairy Lotto can also find you lotto numbers matched to your preferences and suggests a combination of your best matches and random numbers, in whatever mix you like.
The Fairy App can also send you reminders about upcoming races and lotteries draws so you never miss a beat!
Q. How does the FREE Fairy App work?
Fairy Racing looks at things like the horse number, the names of the horse, jockey and trainer, the horse’s odds, the colours being worn by the jockey and if the horse is a boy or girl, and makes suggestions that reflect your criteria. Fairy Racing makes her selections using non-form based criteria.
When you view a lotto draw, Fairy Lotto asks you to decide how many random numbers you would like per game. The remaining numbers will be matched to your preferences – and highlighted with a yellow star.
You can change your wand preferences at any time to reflect your mood!

Q. How do I play – horse racing?
Clicking on the ‘Races’ tab takes you to a list of all the races for the day followed by the next couple of days.
Click on the racing location you’re interested in and let Fairy Racing make selections for as many races as you’d like.
Simply select a race and wave your phone to wave the Fairy Racing wand to generate your number 1 selection.
If you don’t like the selection generated (or you simply want to see the other horses in the race), you can tap on the “Don’t like it? See more picks for you here!” link at the bottom of the Best Match screen.
On this page, all the horses in the race are listed in order of the best matches to your wand preferences. Tapping on any of the horses listed allows you to view more information about the horse.
Q. How do I play – lotteries?
Clicking on the ‘Lotteries’ tab takes you to a list of all upcoming lotteries draws.
Click on the lotteries draw that you’re interested in, select how many random numbers you would like per game (to create a blend of numbers matched to your preferences and random numbers) and let Fairy Lotto make suggestions for as many lotteries games as you’d like.
You can also manually change numbers for a lotteries game by clicking on the individual game and then changing the numbers.
Please note that due to current regulatory restrictions Queensland residents are unable to purchase tickets via the Oz Lotteries app.
Q. What is the I’m Feeling Lucky button on the Home tab?
Clicking on the ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button will offer a ‘best match’ on a random upcoming race or lotteries draw.
Q. How often can I change my wand preferences?
You can change your wand preferences at any time, as often as you like, by clicking on the little wand on the top left hand side of the home page.
You can complete your changes at any time by clicking ‘Done’ on the top right of the screen, or by clicking ‘Finish’ on the last screen.
Your changes will be saved by clicking ‘Done’ even if you don’t scroll all the way to the last screen.
Q. Do I have to select in every category in the wand selection screen?
You can choose to make selections in one category, or many.
Some categories limit you to choosing from one alternative – eg a boy horse or a girl horse.
Other categories allow you choose as many options as you like – such as colours, numbers and letters.
Q. If I change my wand will it change my selections?
If you go to a race and don’t like the selections that have been returned, make some changes to the wand selection screen and then return to the race.
Your selections will update to reflect the changes that you have made.
For lotto, you have the option of rewaving your wand and generating new selections by clicking on the wand icon on the top right hand side of the screen.
Q. What if I don’t like the selection which comes through after waving the wand – or if I just want to see all of the horses in a race?
If the top selection doesn’t immediately take your fancy, or if you want to check out the other options for a race, click on the link “Don’t like it? See more picks for you here!” at the bottom of the screen.
This will then take you to a list of all runners in a race – sorted in order of your best matches.
Your best selection is at the top of the list (as shown by the Star symbol).
You can see further details of each of the horses in this list, by clicking on the name of the horse (provided you have a TAB account).
Q. What does the star symbol mean?
The star symbol next to a horse indicates it is your best match.
In the lotto screen, the star symbolises numbers matched to your preferences. Random numbers have no star.
Q. What are all the names in the ‘Today’s Races’ screen?
The names shown in the ‘Today’s Races’ screen are the names of venues in which races are taking place.
For example – Flemington in Melbourne, Randwick in Sydney, Eagle Farm in Brisbane, Morphettville in Adelaide, Ascot in Perth, etc.
Clicking on one of the venues will then open the races to take place at that venue on that day.
Q. What kind of bets can I put on for horse racing?
You can put a bet on a horse to win a race on a ‘fixed odds’ basis with TAB. The odds shown throughout the app are the fixed odds prices offered by TAB. These odds change from time to time – and will be confirmed once you have clicked the ‘Place a bet with TAB’ button, entered your stake and placed and confirmed your bet. The dividends shown are for each $1 unit. So if you had placed a $5 win bet on a horse which won, you would receive 5 times the dividend for the win.
NB. The fixed odds price shown in Fairy Racing may change after you have placed your bet. This simply reflects the change in the market odds for a horse – the odds might get higher or lower, but the amount you would win if your horse comes home first will be fixed at the price in the market at the time the bet was placed. If the odds of a horse change, you can place further bets at the new price.
Q. What are ‘short odds’ and what is a ‘long shot’?
One of the options in the wand selection tool allows users to express a preference for horses with ‘short odds’ or horses that are considered a ‘long shot’.
A horse which is favoured by the market will tend have short odds- as this reflects that more people have placed a bet on this horse. This suggests that a greater proportion of the market gives the horse a winning chance – hence the lower odds (or ‘short odds’).
A ‘long shot’ is a horse which has larger odds – which reflects that less people think the horse has a chance of winning. However, a long shot winner can pay large dividends!
Q. When does betting close?
Betting for a race closes once the race commences.
You won’t be able to place any bets on a race once the race has started.
Make sure you give yourself enough time to find your selection and then click through to place your bet with TAB.
Q. How do I know if I have won?
If you have clicked through to TAB to place a bet on a horse, you will receive a push notification if that horse wins the race.
Clicking on that race will show the results of that race. (Sometimes only the horses running first, second, third and fourth are shown).
If you placed a bet on a horse that has won, you will also note that your account balance will change.
NB. Sometimes there can be a short delay after the race finishes before the results are delivered, as a runner way wish to contest the outcome.
Winnings are also paid after ‘Correct Weight’ is declared on the race. ‘Correct Weight’ is the declaration from the race stewards that the race result is official.
For lotto, Oz Lotteries will send you an email notification if you purchased a winning ticket.
Q. What is the little coin which appears throughout the Fairy App?
The coin shows your TAB account balance in the Racing tab and the Oz Lotteries account balance in the Lotto tab.
If your coin resets to $0 even though your account balance is greater than $0, you can update the balance by unlinking and then re-linking your account. You can do this from your user settings (accessed by clicking on the avatar on the top right hand side of the home screen, and then clicking on ‘Linked Accounts’).
After unlinking your account, re-link it to TAB or Oz Lotteries (as applicable) by clicking on the link button and then entering your account details. A permanent solution will be issued shortly via an update to the app.
Q. I’ve selected number 5 and the letter Q – why isn’t number 5 coming up on top?
The Fairy Racing algorithm looks at many factors when finding the best matches for a race.
In this example, if the name of the horse and the name of the trainer both included the letter Q, this would also score highly – as would horse number 5. You can still view what horse is number 5 by clicking on the “Don’t like it? See more picks for you here!” link at the bottom of the Best Match screen.
Q. What are the binoculars and TV for?
Once you have selected a venue, you will notice a pair of binoculars on the top right hand side of the screen.
Clicking on the binoculars will ‘subscribe’ you for that event for the day so that you never miss a beat during the busyness of a day at the races.
You will receive notifications 20 minutes before the start of a race, and a reminder just before the horses are ready to jump.
You can turn the notifications on and off at any time by clicking in the binoculars.
Once you have subscribed to a venue, the binoculars will also appear in the list of race meetings shown in the ‘Today’s Races’ screen.
Clicking on the TV screen found in a lotto draw will send you a reminder before the draw so you have enough time to buy a ticket. You can also set reminders for lotto draws in the notifications section of User Settings (found by clicking on the avatar on the top right hand side of the screen), and then clicking on reminders.
Q. What are the weather symbols next to the venue names?
The weather symbols give you an idea of the weather forecast for a venue if weather information is available.
Q. Why does the wand appear next to a race or lotteries draw?
The wand next to a race or lotteries draw indicates that you have waved your wand and The Fairy has made a best match for that race / lotteries draw.
Q. What is the green money symbol which sometimes appears next to a horse or a race?
The green money symbol signifies that you have clicked through to place a bet with TAB.
This doesn’t mean that your bet has been placed (you will need to ensure that your bet has been correctly placed once you have clicked through with TAB) – however it acts a bookmark of the horses which have taken your fancy.
This symbol will still appear if you click through to TAB but do not then place your bet.
Q. My horse is ‘scratched’ – what does this mean?
Horses can sometimes be withdrawn from a race. This means that the horse has been ‘scratched’.
If you have placed a bet on a horse that is scratched, your bet will be refunded.
Scratched horses still appear in the list of horses in a race as horses can be scratched at any time before the race has started. The ‘No Entry’ symbol is shown next to horses that have been scratched from a race.
